Some may wonder why I call my page “Penguins, VWs, Teaching and Literature.” It is quite simple really, these are some things that I enjoy very much. Let me see if I can explain.
1.
Penguins – I began collecting penguins out of a joke that started between some friends and I. (that is the most I will ever disclose) This collection started about 23 years ago. My first penguin was given to me by my very good friend Dave and then flew out of the window of my VW, thanks to my boyfriend at the time, also named Dave.
2. VWs - In December 1984, I bought my first car. It was a 1969, red, convertible VW, and as many of my VW friends say, ” I was bitten by the Bug.” I fell in love with this quirky little car and it’s unique personality. Trust me, older VWs, all have personalities – they are all different. I immersed myself in the local VW culture in San Jose and always spent Friday and Saturday nights cruising the El Camino in Santa Clara/Sunnyvale with other VW enthusiasts. I drove that car to and from Malibu, where I went to college, for 3 years – it never let me down. I finally sold it in 1994. But my love for the VW never faded and now I own a “Penguin” VW.
3. Teaching – Well, this one is kind of a no-brainer. Teaching is what I do. I teach Jr. High and I enjoy it. Most people when they find out I teach Jr. High say, “Oh, I am so sorry, that must be rough.” I always respond that I like Jr. High students and could not imagine teaching any other grade. I guess I like Jr. High students because they are a little quirky like my VW. (compliment)
Okay – so I am a “little” younger in this picture – but it is still me!
4. Literature - Read a book and you open every possible world that is imaginable. There would be no TV, no movies, no video games without the written word. Reading allows you to see other worlds, to learn new things, to “spy” on other people’s lives and not get in trouble. When reading you get to meet new people who will never judge you, you get to travel to different locations without paying for a ticket and you can go on the adventure of a lifetime. Reading is the thing that makes the human race intelligent. Don’t let your life be deprived of this rich experience. READ!!!
